American Federation of Teachers Welcomes Bernie Sanders' Proposal

Tiffanee Saunders has served in several educational positions in the past few years, most recently as a special education teacher at the Foundation School in Prince George’s County, Maryland. She closely watches policies and procedures that affect education. As a qualified teacher, Tiffanee Saunders is a member of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), which responded to Bernie Sanders’ latest proposal on educational reform.

The proposal aims to balance how federal funds are used for academic purposes. It calls for a hold on charter school growth until an audit can determine the impact charter school funding has on resource needs for conventional public schools. It advocates for increased financial transparency from charter schools, and a ban on for-profit charters that, according to AFT, often have unsatisfactory conditions for educators that impact their ability to teach well.

AFT praised Sanders’ proposal and regarded it as a move in the right direction for charter school accountability. According to the organization, 90 percent of parents in the United States choose public over charter schools for their children, and federal funding should be distributed accordingly.
